1. The Container trans-shipping port will destroy our living conditions. Our business here depends strongly on tourism and Southern Crete is famous for its soft form which is not concentrated to only a few centres but is distributed equal within the region so that it secures the living of several thousand families in different villages and small towns. Modern logistics technology helps saving human manpower by automation and concentration of high quality jobs to a few logistics centres all over the world. There might be some 200-300 jobs established by the port but: Greece has already become an expensive EURO country which does not provide cheap labour anymore. Means, these open positions will most likely be filled with people from abroad. Additionally we will loose a few thousand jobs in tourism. In Summary: The harbour will lead to a great loss of jobs and therefore destroy our living conditions. 2. Our environment provides us with a beautiful landscape which will be destroyed by the port project. Our environment provides us with a beautiful landscape which is our particular resource in competing with other regions of tourism in Europe. With the harbour project three regions are in jeopardy that have already been declared protection worthy by the EU before. If ecological problems will arise in Timbaki, this will be within the borders of the European Community and we have to care for their solution. Latest news on ecological catastrophes in China that affected millions of people not only in China but also abroad and the crisis management of the Chinese government in particular show that we have to worry a lot: We do not want investors in Timpaki that do not care for environmental issues. 3. With the trans-shipping port in Timbaki Europe opens its doors to dumping markets. Already now, the world community looses estimated 300 billion EURO through patent violation and illegal import of goods by China. This has to be fought against, also by stopping the Asian investment in Timbaki. For economic reasons the protection of the European market has to be an issue on the agenda of the EU and therefore an issue for us all. During the EU/Asia summit in Helsinki some weeks ago this was discussed in very much detail. 4. Southern Crete is the cradle of European history. Southern Crete is the cradle of European history: Zeus took Europe as a hostage and fled to Crete, going ashore at almost the very place where the trans-shipment port will be built. As Europeans we have to be strictly against spoiling that mythological place. S.H. . ecocrete.gr . |
