On 15 March 2007 an aggreement was reached between the governments of Greece, Bulgaria and Russia for an oil-pipeline to be constructed between Burgas and Alexandroupolis. Crude oil would then be transported from the port by tankers with deadweight of 300 000 tons, against those currently crossing the Aegean Sea, which have half that capacity! The idea is that about 35.000.000 tons of crude oil will be transported through the Aegean Sea. Of course, these quantities will be in addition of the oil transported via the Aegean Sea at present.
The aggreement was signed without public consultation. The local population was not (and still isn't) adequatly informed of the pros and cons of this project.
No land-planning or environmental assessment studies have been completed and made available to the public so far.
Aegean Sea's water quality will decrease significantly posing a great threat to the Greece' s Tourism and Fisheries's industries, consequently having a devastating effect on the livelihoods of people dependant on those economic sectors. The same will be true for the turkish population living by the Aegean Sea coasts in Minor Asia (West Turkey). No plans have been announced on what will come to replace those job-losses and compensate all those people, who have few other choices apart from tourism or fisheries' related jobs.
Corrosion would mean reduced life expectancy for the pipe or very high maintenance costs to guarantee maximum life expectancy. The Cook Inlet corroded and leaking pipelines were put just before 1970. Would that mean average operational and accident-free life expectancy of a pipeline is less than 30 years? So short-term gains are preferred against long-term sustainable development for the Aegean Sea? Is the Aegean Sea the most suitable oil-pipeline terminal?
