DO YOU KNOW HOW TO/WANT TO LIVE WITH THE FEAR?

Balkans and South East Europe, that were among the most non nuclear areas of the world, are now at the focus of the nuclear industry with many new reactors to be scattered all over, in all the countries, even in Greece!

Turkey announced its decision to proceed with the construction of its first nuclear plant at the south west coast, last Wednesday (13-2-2008)!

In Akkuyu, very close to the islands of Rhodes and Cyprus!

The guilty silence of the Greek Government continues

While humanity, despite the many difficulties, makes strong efforts to promote Renewable Sources of Energy, unscrupulous economic interests, make these efforts to resemble useless, senseless. It is not accidental that during the year 2007 the European Union has actually made serious progress with the Renewables, by the increase of Wind Energy coming first among all others. At the same time, E.U. has made it to REDUCE the use of nuclear for the production of energy by 1203 MW, as stated on this article of the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA).
EcoCorfu, which is a member of the Mediterranean Non Nuclear Neighborhood (MN3), calls everyone that can, to protest against this and all the plans for the construction of any nuclear reactor in this small and sensitive area.
See the: Press release of the Mediterranean Antinuclear Watch, which is stated in Rhodes, Greece, about the decision for the construction in Turkey.
The Balkan area is too small to host nuclear reactors. Also, Balkans area, is not suitable at all for the nuclear industry, because it has always been much affected by Earthquakes.
Even the smallest leak, will contaminate a lot, all of the (small and many) countries.
Press release of the Mediterranean Non Nuclear Neighborhood (MN3)
The Nuclear madness is now spreading at the Balkans, as it has never done before, threatening us that we will be living in one of the most unpleasant, and unwanted reality.
According to Mr. Michalis Tremopoulos, founding member of the Greek Green party, member of the prefecture council of Thessalonica and an old and active member of the historical NGO Ecologic Movement of Thessalonica, the Turkey's decision is only the beginning for the Balkan Peninsula and South East Europe.
The nuclear cartel has plans to completely "Nuclearise" all the Balkan countries including Greece!
Bulgaria, Turkey, Romania, Albania, FYROM, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Hungary, and also Greece, are moving more and more, towards this energy solution.
Here is how Mr. Tremopoulos, briefly describes the situation on the Balkans right now, (translated by EcoCorfu).

Michalis Tremopoulos, founding member of the Greek Green party, member of the prefecture council of Thessalonica and an old and active member of the historical NGO Ecologic Movement of Thessalonica, describes the situation, after Turkey's decision to go on with the construction of its first nuclear power plant. Turkey’s decision is only the beginning for the Balkan Peninsula and South East Europe:

"The nuclear ring tightens in the Balkans. Greece, though, instead of undertaking initiatives in order to stop the plans for the spreading of nuclear factories, is actually flirting with them.
Bulgaria, after countless postponements, declares that up to 2009 it will close finally the nuclear station of Koslodui. At the same time though, it prepares the manufacture of a new nuclear factory in Belene, a plan that was frozen up to now, due to many protests and reactions, with two stations of 1.000 megawatt, each. At the 18.1.2008 Bulgaria signed an agreement with Russia, with manufacturing cost of 4 millions of Euros.

Turkey has announced its choice for the construction of three nuclear power plants of a total of 5.000 MW. The Turkish Institution of Nuclear Energy already has realized premeditation studies of locality for the construction, in 8 prefectures, with accent in Akkuyu, which is found opposite to Rhodes and Cyprus, Sinopi of Bosporus and the Eastern Thrace. In the 9.11.07 the Turkish National assembly approved a law for the manufacturing of nuclear factories in Turkey. The Turkish antinuclear movement, that had made it to cancel the manufacturing of a nuclear factory in Akkuyu of Mersinas in the past, is preparing for new protests. Already, at the 14.2.08 was announced by the Minister of Energy, the decision of Turkish government to advance in the arrangement of the first nuclear station in Akkuyu. "The region which is already ready for the manufacturing is Akkuyu", declared Giouler at the television network NTV. It is in deed to carry out auction competition on 21 February for the manufacturing of the power plant, which is forecasted to be placed in use up to 2014. The preparatory work has begun also for the manufacturing of a second nuclear station, near to harbour of Sinopi. Turkey has demonstrated intense interest for the reactor of CANDU type (Canadian Deuterium Uranium), which is used, among others, by Pakistan, India, N. Korea and Argentina. The particular reactor does not need enriched uranium for his operation but natural uranium U-235 that exists in Turkey, and that makes Turkey independent from the nuclear fuel market. Even if it is considered one of the most expensive types of reactors, it can produce double quantities of plutonium, element essential for the manufacture of nuclear arms.

In Albania, at the 10.11.07 the Albanian Prime Ministe, announced the intention of manufacturing by a big French company of a nuclear factory in Dyracio, 100 kilometres from the northern borders of Greece! Also, they are discussing with American and Asiatic companies (Camossi, Westing house).
Romania owns a nuclear factory near the estuaries of Danube in the Black Sea, (Cernavoda). with 2 reactors of 650 MW, from the five that it totally programs (the three of 1000 MW), with entanglement of the Italian company ENEL for the manufacture of units 3 and 4. Tsernobonta plant uses the water of Danube for refrigeration, same as Koslodui does and it is exposed to the same dangers, which can cause a major nuclear accident. The experience of Rumanian technicians is small, something that increases the danger.

FYROM: In the older planning for the "Completed growth of valley of Bardari", the Former Yugoslavic Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), forecasted the creation near Axios river 2 nuclear reactors. Straight after the recent recognition from Canada of the country’s name as "Macedonia", an agreement was achieved between the two countries for the purchase of nuclear reactors of Canadian origin.
Czech Republic holds today a nuclear factory in Dukovany with four reactors in use, with total power of 1648 MW. These reactors, (of technology PWR), were manufactured from 1985 to 1988. Today, another two complete their manufacturing, of a total power of 1824 MW.

In the territory of Slovenia, after the split of Czechoslovakia, remained the nuclear factory of Bohunice. It has five reactors, with total force of 2040 MW. They are also of PWR technology. They first functioned at the years 1978-85. Three more reactors are being manufactured, with total capacity of 1144 MW (Moshovce, Tepenly). The new reactors will replace the older ones.

In Hungary, there is a nuclear factory in (Paks) with four reactors of total power of 1729 MW, that cover almost the 40% of production of electric energy in the country. The 4 reactors PWR were manufactured between years 1983 and 1987.

Slovenia shares with Croatia the management of the nuclear factory of (Krsko). They are discussing the purchase of the 50% of the share of Croatia.

There comes Greece’s part. Greece, where the antinuclear movement cancelled the plans for a nuclear factory in Karistos of Evia in the' 70, is a country often hit by earthquakes. The experience that we have from the nuclear energy is already tragic: We all remember the nuclear accident in Chernobyl in 1986, the consequences which not only Ukraine and Russia had to pay for, but the entire Europe and the Middle East and of course our country too. The radioactivity does not recognise borders and this was proved in a tragic way in 1986, when many countries took decisions to close their nuclear factories or to abandon their plans of creating new ones.
In Germany, it is scheduled that all the nuclear factories will close up till the year 2020, after an agreement promoted by the Green party, when they participated in the government.

Greece however, now, not only does not react at the nuclear plans of the neighbour countries, but examines itself the possibility of creation of a nuclear factory in Northern Greece or in a neighbouring country with the finance of the GREEK NATIONAL ELECTRICAL COMPANY!
At the same time, Prime Minister Mr Karamanlis expresses itself positively for the nuclear programs of other countries, in many ways…"

EcoCorfu: This was a part o the Proposal of Mr. Tremopoulos at the meeting organized by the Greek Green Party (EcoGreens) and the South East European oil pipeline watch Network, in Thessalonica about the Energy issues. The rest of the article explains details about the situation in Greece internally, that may not interest much non Greek readers.
The full Greek version is found: here.

Mr. Tremopoulos ends:
"The antinuclear protest is now more intereuropean and more international than ever before".

EcoCorfu: Let’s react globally
We thank you very much for your attention.
